Raja Zafarul Haq, leader of the House in the Pakistan Senate, has said Shehbaz Sharif would be the new president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Raja Zafarul Haq said that the decision to make Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif the president of PML-N would soon be announced as it had already been decided in PML-N's consultative meeting, adding that majority of the members were of the opinion that the party should be handed over to Shehbaz Sharif, the News International reported.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday directed the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to appoint a new president of the party following the Supreme Court order that disqualified the former Prime Minister and President of PML-N to hold any public office.

The ECP in the notice stated that under the Political Parties Order 2002, a disqualified lawmaker cannot hold any office in a political party.

The ECP also observed that Article 15 of the PML-N's own party constitution says that if the seat of party president is vacant, it is to be filled within one week's time.

The ECP asked the PML-N to elect a new party leader and then inform the body.
