For Benedict Cumberbatch's 'Sherlock', it's definitely not a game anymore.

A new teaser for the fourth season of 'Sherlock' shows the 40-year-old actor's titular character in a dark place.

The preview begins with a voiceover, "The roads we walk have demons beneath and yours have been waiting for a very long time."

The villain, played by Toby Jones, seems to exert power over Sherlock Holmes in the teaser.

"What's the very worst thing you can do to your very best friends?" Jones' character asks, "Tell them your darkest secret."

After several quick glimpses showing many of Holmes' dearest friends, the camera cuts to a scene where distraught Holmes stares straight into the camera and says "I love you" presumably sounding his words.

Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the BBC series also stars Martin Freeman (as John Watson), Louise Brealy, Andrew Scott, Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs and many more.

'Sherlock' season 4 will premiere on January 1, 2017.
