Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Tuesday ordered an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the death case of Arunachal student Nido Taniam, who was beaten up at South Delhi's Lajpat Nagar area.
"The family of Nido Taniam has met me. His father and mother along with some 20 people had come to me. The family wants that the investigation should be conducted by CBI. So, we have decided to hand over the case to CBI," Shinde told media here today.
Earlier today, Taniam's family had also met Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, and pressed their demand for an action against Delhi Police.
Meanwhile, the postmortem report of the victim was released on Monday which stated that Taniam died of injuries inflicted upon the head and face by a blunt object.
Taniam was allegedly beaten at Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi on January 29 as he got into a brawl with local shopkeepers while reacting to a verbal racial slur and taunts on his hair style. The next day, when he didn't wake up, his friends rushed him to AIIMS, where he was declared dead.
