The Central Government's initiative to setup a silk printing unit in Tripura is going to boost the sericulture sector of the state.
Earlier, the printing of the silk saris was done from outside the state, which is a lengthy and expensive process.
With sericulture, or silk farming, becoming popular as a side income, especially among rural people, the Tripura government is making all possible efforts to increase silk production through adaptation of modern techniques.
Several silk reeling and spinning centers have come up in Tripura to cope up with the increasing production of silk cocoon.
The initiative got a boast after being engaged with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act Act (MGNREGA).
With technical help from the Central Silk Board, the state has gone for modernisation of silk reeling centres throughout the state with facility of semi-automatic reeling machines besides twisting machine and other necessary facilities.
Tripura produces one of the best qualities of silk.
