Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday admitted that food prices did increase, although, he would have liked to do more to avoid such a situation. At the same time, he re-assured that steps have been taken to soften inflation.

"I do agree that we could not keep the control on food prices which we would have liked to. In recent times though, we have tasted success in taming inflation. I also would like to tell you that through the public distribution system, not even once was the prices of essential food items ever increased. Instead, we have been blamed that we did not do enough to contain corruption. In fact, the truth is that the central government has taken steps which nowhere else in the country could do," Singh said.
