Sir Elton John has become the first ever recipient of the new Brits Icon award, for his contribution to the field of music.

The veteran singer won the prize at a special gig that marked his return to the stage following his surgery for appendicitis, the BBC reported.

The 'Sacrifice' hit maker was presented the new award by his pal and singer Rod Stewart, who described him as "the second-best rock singer ever".

John, who has won 35 gold and 25 platinum albums in the UK, said that he was "flattered" by the honour, given to artists who have had a "lasting impact" on UK culture.

While accepting the gold Brits trophy, the star got a standing ovation and he dedicated his win to writing partner Bernie Taupin, as well as his fans.

The concert, which was attended by the likes of Liz Hurley and Gary Barlow, featured video messages from former President Clinton, and tennis legend Billie Jean King, for whom Sir Elton wrote 'Philadelphia Freedom'.
