A latest proposal reportedly seeks to transform London's cycling infrastructure by building a skyway that would place wide bike paths above the city's rail network.

British architect Norman Foster has revealed the SkyCycle plan to build a highway specifically for bicycles that envisions a network of elevated bike paths free of cars.

According to Cnet, SkyCycle has been proposed by Foster + Partners, along with landscape architects Exterior Architecture and transport consultant Space Syntax, which would include a wide deck spanning more than 130 miles and suspended above the existing suburban rail network with over 200 access points.

The designers said that the skyway would be built to accommodate more than 12,000 cyclists per hour.

The report said that the project, which is already backed by the Network Rail and Transport of London, if approved could be functioning within 20 years.
