Former Australian great Steve Waugh has asked new skipper Steve Smith to trust his own instincts if he wants to be a successful captain in future.
The 50-year-old advised Smith that he can't please everyone, but added that he should listen to one or more close advisers, news.com.au reported.
Speaking on the common theory that the best batsman should bat at number three, Waugh felt the idea has become outdated and the batsman should bat at a position where he feels comfortable.
He suggested that Smith should bat at number four while Usman Khawaja should take the number three position.
Smith, for whom the Bangladesh tour would have been his first assignment as full-time skipper, will now lead a young team in the home Test series against New Zealand.
Australia will be missing the services of veteran wicket-keeper Brad Haddin, opening batsman Chris Rogers and all-rounder Shane Watson in the upcoming series.
They will play three Tests against New Zealand on their home soil, starting from November 5 at Brisbane.
