U.S. President Barack Obama seems to require a fresh lesson in Olympic history after making an erroneous reference to track and field, and swimming in the 2014 Winter Olympics to be held on Sochi, Russia.

Taking part in the popular "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno, Obama, while referring to the Sochi Winter Olympics, said Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia "have a big stake in making sure the Olympics work."

He created a faux pax when he further went on to say: "And, if Russia wants to uphold the Olympic spirit, then every judgment should be made on the track, or in the swimming pool, or on the balance beam, and people's sexual orientation shouldn't have anything to do with it."

It immediately invited a series of responses from social media commentators, the Washington Times reports.

Some commentators were quick to note that the winter games don't include sports like swimming, track or indoor events involving a balance beam.

Another commentator said: "Not only the worst president, but the dumbest one in the history of this country. No wonder he doesn't want to reveal his school records. He probably graduated from the University of Tijuana."

And another said: "They should move the Olympics to one of the 57 states!"

And yet one more: "Seriously, he needs to step away from the pipe.
