Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday expressed sadness at the passing away of eminent cartoonist R.K. Laxman, saying his 'Common Man' represented India for more than one generation.
"Sonia Gandhiji has expressed deep sadness at passing away of Shri RK Laxman. Describing his death as passing away of an institution Sonia ji said Shri Laxman's"Common Man", for more than one generation represented India and served as conscience keeper of establishment," said a Congress statement.
"Shri Laxman was an intellectual giant who will be missed for decades to come and will serve as an inspiration to many," it added.
Eminent cartoonist R K Laxman passed away in a Pune hospital on Monday evening.
The 94-year-old was on a mechanical ventilator last week with his health taking a turn for the worse on Sunday, according to reports.
Through his iconic character of "The Common Man", Laxman held a mirror to the society by creating satire targeting politicians for many decades.
