Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Sunday expressed condolence at the demise of former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir.
Remembering him as an outstanding legal luminary, Sonia Gandhi said, "As a judge, Justice Kabir's contribution to legal and justice system of India shall never be forgotten. His commitment to human rights and constitutional propriety was exemplary."
Justice Kabir passed away after a prolonged illness at 2.52 p.m. on Sunday in Kolkata.
Justice Kabir was suffering from end-stage renal disease, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Coronary Artery Disease and Urinary Tuberculosis.
Justice Kabir held office from September 2012 till his retirement on July 2013. He was the 39th Chief Justice of India. He was also the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court in 2005.
Justice Kabir also assumed the office of acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on January 11, 2005.
