Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal paid homage to hockey icon and legend Major Dhyan Chand on his 110th birth anniversary here on Saturday.
Sonowal offered floral tribute before the statue of Major Dhyan Chand at National Stadium.
Tennis player Sania Mirza was also present on the occasion.

"This is a special day for all the sports lovers in the country....it commemorates the birthday of Major Dhayan Chand. I pay my deep respects to the great legend," Sonowal told media.
Major Dhyan Chand's birthday is also celebrated as National Sports Day in India.

Major Dhyan Chand was a legendary hockey player who won gold medals for India at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympics.
Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905 and died on December 3, 1979. He was widely considered the greatest field hockey player of all time and is most remembered for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats. India was the most dominant team in hockey between 1928 and 1964.
