Sony and Panasonic have reportedly ended their 18-month-old partnership aimed at producing OLED panels for large displays and televisions.

The two electonics companies had hoped to be in mass production by the end of this year when the partnership was set to end.

According to Cnet, the companies had aimed at reducing costs of production and potentially making the ultrathin OLED panels more affordable to vendors looking to bring the technology to future sets.

However, the Japanese companies have ended their partnership to focus their efforts on conventional LCD screens for so-called 4K ultra high-definition televisions.

The report said that rivals LG and Samsung have been so far led the OLED market, but now they are seen struggling with sales of the expensive devices.
