Chasing a target of 287, India struggled to begin their second inning on a positive note on Tuesday, as South Africa reduced visitors to 35 for 3 at stumps on Day four of the second Test match, at SuperSports Park here.
The huge moment came when Lungi Ngidi continued his good form and scalped the wicket of captain Virat Kohli.
Earlier, South Africa began the fourth day with an overnight score of 90/2. AB De Villiers and Dean Elgar frustrated the Indians with their patient and gritty batting. Both shared a 141-run partnership before it was finally broken by Shami.
South African wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock once again failed to fire with the bat as he struggled to play against the moving ball.
Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis tried to make amends and kept the scoreboard ticking, while he continued to run out of partners.
In the second innings, Shami was the pick of the bowlers, scalping 4 for 49, followed by Bumrah's 3 for 70. Ishant Sharma took 2 for 40, while Ravichandran Ashwin had figures of 1 for 78.
India and South Africa scores in the first innings were 307 and 335 respectively. The Proteas are leading the series 1-0.
