South Korea's apex court revokes law criminalising adultery

South Korea's top court has reportedly decriminalized adultery after revoking a 1953 law under which cheating spouses could be sentenced to two years in prison.

At least 5,500 people have been convicted under the law since 2008. South Korea was one of only three Asian countries to criminalise adultery, reported the BBC.

One of the judges on the nine-judge panel said that the law was "unconstitutional."

However, presiding judge Park Han-Chul said that "public conceptions of individuals' sexual rights had changed" and added that even if adultery should be "condemned as immoral," the state could not intervene in individuals' private lives.
