Sri Lanka halts landslide recovery operations over threats of more earth slips

Authorities in Sri Lanka have temporarily halted the recovery operations at the landslide site in Koslanda Meeriyabedda village in the island-nation's Badulla District as the inclement weather continued threatening more earth slips.

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) was quoted by the Lanka Page web site, as saying that the rescue operations were suspended due to observation of a flow of muddy water from the soil with rains. The phenomenon is considered a warning of an impending landslide.

About 1500 security personnel armed forces personnel who were deployed in the search and recovery mission were informed through loudspeakers to move out of the area.

 

People in the high risk areas have already been evacuated. They are accommodated in two safe centers which were established at Koslanda Tamil School and Poonagala Tamil School. The two centers provide shelter to 1,755 people belonged to 479 families.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center confirmed that 10 people have died and 28 are still missing due to the landslide that struck the village of Meeriyabedda on 29th October.

The DMC said only three children had lost both of their parents due to the landslide.
