The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday confirmed that the newly elected Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena will be paying an official visit to India from the February 15-18.
"President Maithripala Sirisena will be visiting India from February 15-18," said MEA official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin at a press briefing.
This visit comes close on the heels of Sri Lanka Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera's visit to India last month. On that occasion, the MEA had stated that the Sri Lankan minister's visit was highly reflective of the importance Colombo places on its ties with New Delhi.
In January, Sri Lanka went to polls, with 19 candidates contesting the elections. Maithiripala Sirisena was voted the new President, beating the incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa after securing 51.28 percent of the votes cast.
