The Government of Sri Lanka has released 51 Indian fishermen and they are on their way back home.
The fishermen, who were released on the orders of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, were arrested for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has described their release as a goodwill gesture.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted, "51 Indian fishermen released from custody left from Thalaimanar in Sri Lanka for home."
Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking for a permanent solution to the problem, besides a more strong and robust diplomatic response.
