Sri Lankan navy detains 20 Indian fishermen

Out of the twenty, 11 fishermen along with two boats were detained yesterday

20 Indian fishermen along with four boats have been detained by the Sri Lankan Navy today in the early hours near Thalai Mannar and Palk Strait.

Out of the twenty, 11 fishermen along with two boats were detained by the Sri Lankan yesterday night when they were fishing near Katchatheevu.

The remaining nine fishermen along with two boats were arrested in the early hours today.

Earlier this month, Sri Lankan Navy had arrested 14 Tamil fishermen and detained their three fishing boats. The country had released 126 Tamil fishermen lodged in Lankan jail as a goodwill gesture.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa had sent a letter last week urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use diplomatic channel to secure the release of 14 Tamil fishermen already in Lankan jail and release of 50 fishing boats from Lankan custody.
