United States President Barack Obama has urged the Congress in "strongest terms" till date to authorize use of force against the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria during his sixth State of the Union address.

While addressing a Congress in which both chambers are controlled by Republicans for the first time, Obama pushed back against the "bankrupt ideology of violent extremism" and lauded U.S.' role in forming a broad coalition to take on the IS instead of "getting dragged into another ground war in the Middle East," reported ABC News.

He urged Congress to show the world that they are united in the mission to tackle terrorism by passing a resolution that would permit use of military force against the IS.
