The fifth victim of the Christmas market shooting in Strasbourg passed away on Sunday (local time).

On December 11, chaos erupted in one of the busiest streets in the city after a shooter, Cherif Chekatt, opened fire at a Christmas market.

The other victims who have lost their lives in the unfortunate incident are Italian journalist Antonio Megalizzi, a Thai tourist, an Afghan native and a local.

The Paris Prosecutor's office announced that the fifth deceased victim was a Polish national, without divulging his identity or any other details, according to Sputnik.

More than 700 law enforcement officials participated in the manhunt to track down the shooter, who was neutralised in an operation on Thursday (local time). He had earlier escaped on December 11, after exchanging shots with police officials.

The market was reopened on December 14 with people visiting the site of the incident to light candles or lay flowers as a tribute to the victims.

The reason behind the shooting is yet to be ascertained.
