Hundreds of students took out a peace march in Siliguri on Saturday to protest crime against women.
Women from all walks of life also joined the peach march carried out by school and college students across the city.
Students held placards with messages asking men to respect women and expressed emotions of suffering.
Students said it is wrong to blame girls for crimes like rape and rather it is the mentality that needs to change.
"If anything unfortunate happens, people blame girls. Wearing short clothes or the style of talking does not cause rape. People who rape and tease women are not bothered by these things. Their mentality is bad. If they want to commit such crimes, they will, no matter how many precautions we take," said a student, Puja Sharma.
Almost 90 percent of rapes in India in 2014 were committed by people known to the victims such as relatives, neighbours and employers, government statistics showed, as activists called for more focus on tackling sexual violence in the home and at work.
In its annual report, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said there were 337,922 reports of violence against women such as rape, molestation, abduction and cruelty by husbands last year.
Meanwhile, Sharma further added if crimes against women were not brought to a halt in the state, the future generation would never be able to move ahead in life.
"We request the government and the authorities to make Siliguri crime free and ensure the safety of girls. If they do not ensure safety for women, then the upcoming generation won't be able to move ahead in future," added Sharma.
Last week, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped and later murdered in South Dinajpur district of the state.
