Eight-time Member of Parliament from the Indore constituency Sumitra Mahajan was unanimously elected as the second woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha on Friday.

Modi had earlier proposed Mahajan's name for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. Modi described it as a very proud moment for the world's largest democracy, India, to have another woman as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

He also said that it should be seen and felt as a great moment for Mahajan, a person who has risen from being a municipal councillor to being an eight-time Member of Parliament, adding that this was probably the first time that the Lok Sabha has 315 first-time MPs.

Mahajan, who has been representing Indore since 1989, is the longest serving woman parliamentarian..

Before Mahajan's election, former union minister Kamal Nath, had been functioning as the Protem Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
