Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the supreme head of India Orthodox Church, Baselios Marthoma Paulose II, here on Tuesday.
The religious leaders presented Modi with a bouquet of flowers and a painting having a picture of Modi meeting his mother Heeraben Modi.
The Christian leaders apprised the Prime Minister about the situation in the backdrop of vandalism at churches in some parts of the country.
The prime minister has unequivocally come out in support of minorities after recent attacks on churches and controversial utterances by right-wing fringe elements about the minority community.
On April 6, Modi met a delegation of Muslim leaders from across the country and expressed "apprehensions" over the increased radicalisation and the "emerging threat of militancy."
While on a visit to France, Modi, addressing the UNESCO, said his government is committed to defending the rights and liberties of all Indians, including those belonging to the minorities.
