World number one Serena Williams' quest for a fifth Olympic gold medal ended in disappointment after being beaten by Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in the third round of the women's singles event at the Rio Olympics in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.

The defending champion, who appeared to have a shoulder problem, suffered a 4-6, 3-6 defeat at the hands of Svitolina, who will next face two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova for a place in the semi-finals, Sport24 reported.

On Sunday, Serena and her sister Venus made an early exit from the quadrennial event after suffering a first round defeat in the women's doubles event.
