Terming the Sydney hostage crisis a 'world problem', Wing Commander (Retd.) Praful Bakshi on Monday said there was a growing need for an anti-terrorist international organization to deal with such events.

"Now, this becomes a world problem and the world police, the INTERPOL is one aspect, but there has to be a special police called anti-terrorist international organization which should have their special police which should work. India can give a lot of support to that. Other countries can give a lot of support to that," said Wing Commander (Retd.) Bakshi.

"Even the Commissioner of Sydney is saying that they have never faced such a situation but they are doing their best, but doing their best is not enough. Now, the problem is a world problem and world must get together and wake up to it," he added.

As per reports, an armed man on Monday took an undisclosed number of people hostage at the Martin Place Cafe in Sydney and displayed a black flag with Arabic script in the window, sparking a security alert in Australia.

Authorities in Australia have reportedly sealed off surrounding streets in Sydney, evacuated people from buildings, and suspended rail services following the incident.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott also reportedly convened a national security meeting to discuss the response to the hostage-taking.
