Syrian Ambassador to India Riyadh Abbas met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday and discussed the current situation in West Asia, especially in Iraq.

"We are concerned about releasing stranded Indians from Iraq. We are too upset to hear about their condition. India is very keen to release its citizens from Iraq. Syria is open to help India fight terrorism," said Abbas.

"Indians living in Syria are absolutely safe. We also have cordial relations with the Iraqi government. Although we can't talk directly, but if we get some request, we will directly contact Iraq government for the same," he added.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin had informed yesterday that 17 more Indian nationals had been evacuated from the zone of conflict in Iraq, and added that captives were still safe.
