The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has announced that over 110,000 people have died in the two-and-a-half-year-old conflict and more than half of those were civilians.

The observatory revealed that 56,138 were civilians, including 5,833 children, who died since the day the revolution began on 18 March 2011 in Deraa province, News24 reports.

The British-based rights group, which opposes Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's rule, has called on United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to work seriously to end the killings in Syria.

According to the report, the observatory has also included recent victims of the gas attack in Damascus suburbs confirming only about 500 deaths in the incident, compared with Washington's figure of more than 1,400.

The report also added that 171 of the dead were from the Lebanese Shi'ite Muslim group Hezbollah, which had sent fighters to help Assad, and some 3,730 of its dead were believed to be foreign fighters.
