The international chemical weapons watchdog's head has said the destruction of Syria's toxic stockpile could begin by late January on the American ship.

Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Ahmet Uzumcu said that it will depend on the security situation of the region as the Syrian weapons needs to be transported through a war zone to the Mediterranean port of Latakia and destroyed aboard the U.S. Navy's MV Cape Ray cargo ship, the Japan Times reports.

He further added that unfortunately the security situation in Syria has deteriorated over the past few weeks as some roads were not even accessible.
