A Syrian official has said reports about Syrian army snipers' shooting pregnant women and their unborn babies are 'totally baseless'.

An official from the Information Ministry told Xinhua that all these reports came in an attempt to tarnish the image of the Syrian Army, which is fulfilling its duty to defend the country and the Syrian people.

The Daily Telegraph's website reported on Saturday that a British surgeon, who spent five weeks volunteering in a Syrian hospital, claimed that the snipers from the Syrian regime were shooting pregnant women and their unborn babies in a disturbing "game" of target practice.

The website also revealed an x-ray photo, which is provided purportedly by a charity named Syria Relief, showing a foetus with a bullet lodged in its skull.
