President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday appointed Justice T.S. Thakur as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI).
CJI H.L. Dattu, who will retire on December 2, had recommended the name of Justice Thakur, the senior most judge, as his successor.
Justice Thakur will have a tenure of one year and one month as the Chief Justice of India and will retire on January 3, 2017.
Justice Thakur, who has served as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court in 2009.
