Farmers in Chennai formed a human chain in sea water on Wednesday to demand greater financial assistance from the AIADMK-led state government to tackle the drought in several districts.

Shouting slogans, the bare bodied farmers threatened to commit suicide if their demands were overlooked.

"Till date, there has been no response to our demands and poor farmers are being overlooked. It is because of this, we have taken this extreme step of wanting to commit suicide," said Maniranapaa, one of the protesting farmers.

Farmers like Aiyyakand said they were not allowed to meet or interact with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, and therefore, they had opted to form a human chain in sea water with the objective of committing suicide.

As per reports, farmers also held bare-bodied demonstrations in Tiruchirappalli District over the same issue.
