Two high ranking officials and a soldier were reportedly martyred in a roadside bomb in the Upper Dir district near the Pak-Afghan border.
The army said that Major General Sanaullah Khan, along with a lieutenant colonel Tauseef and Lance Naik Irfan Sattar, were killed after visiting an outpost near the border.
Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid claimed responsibility for the bombing, Daily Times reports.
The attack comes amidst Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government discussing whether to pursue peace talks with Pakistan Taliban.
A military official said that they are investigating whether the IED was remote-controlled or a tined device also whether it was exclusively planted to target the senior military commander or aimed at targeting any military convoy.
The report added that in another incidence, two roadside bomb attacks killed two soldiers and wounded four others in North Waziristan town of Miranshah.
