Jayalalithaa loyalist and Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O Panneerselvam, who has been unanimously selected by AIADMK MLAs to be the state's chief minister, met Governor, K. Rosiah at Raj Bhawan on Sunday.

Although he did not speak to the media, he has submitted a letter with a resolution passed by AIADMK legislators in which he (O. Panneerselvam) has been unanimously elected as the leader of AIADMK party.

Sources also say that the meeting held between the two leaders as per constitutional requirement, may have discussed issues about the dates for swearing-in ceremony, and his choice of cabinet colleagues.

Earlier in the day, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) unanimously selected Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam to be the new chief minister of the state.

Panneerselvam will succeed J. Jayalalithaa who stands disqualified as the state's chief minister after she was convicted yesterday by a special court in Bangalore in connection with an 18-year-old disproportionate assets case, and was sentenced to serve four years in jail and asked to pay Rs.100 crores as fine.

He had earlier been Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and was also chairman of the Periakulam municipality in 1996.
