Tawde clarifies govt's stand on Madrasas, says move to strengthen education

Says govt not proposing ban on religious education

ANI New Delhi

Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde on Saturday said the state government's move on Madrasas is just aimed at strengthening education standards.

"Many people have welcomed the kind of education we are providing in Science and Social Science. Under Madrasa education, we are not putting a ban on any kind of religious education. Instead we will be providing them with books. We just want to strengthen them," Tawde told ANI.

The Maharashtra government announced in June that the teaching of Maths, English, Science and Social Science would be mandatory for availing government grants, adding that those children studying in institutions not offering the same would be considered 'out of school'.
