Over 200 students of a government school in Warangal district of southern Telangana state fell sick after consuming free folic acid tablets distributed at a swine flu prevention camp in their school.
Reportedly, around 700 students of different age groups took the tablets at their school camp on Monday. They were also given homeopathic medicines under the ongoing anti-swine flu drive, undertaken by the Telangana government.
After lunch many students complained of nausea, stomach ache and started writhing in pain.
Shrill cries of the students and anxious parents created panic in the district hospital.
Meanwhile, Warangal Collector V. Karuna said that all the students were safe and under care of a team of doctors.
"As a part of health programme, ion folic acid tablets were given to children in a district school. After that some allergic reaction happened to the children. They were admitted to the hospital. Some of the sick children have already been discharged. Doctors are attending the sick children and some more will be discharged soon. There is absolutely no issue," she said.
According to doctors, iron tablets could cause stomach irritation and the midday meal laced with spicy curry might have resulted in pain.
