Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) has detected a record 54,000 becquerels of radioactive cesium per litre in groundwater.

The water was collected on Wednesday from an observation well east of the reactor 2 turbine at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

According to the Japan Times, the radioactive cesium level far exceeded the previous record of 22,000 becquerels detected in groundwater taken from a separate observation well in July 2013.
