Tewari condemns NDA regime's 'objection to giving constitutional rights to LGBT community'

Taking strong exception to the NDA Government reportedly moving the Supreme Court on the issue of reservation pertaining to the LGBT community, Congress Party leader Manish Tewari on Thursday said that all gay, lesbian and bisexual persons do not come under the transgender category.

"We fail to understand why the BJP Government should have objections with regard to the conferment of constitutional rights on the LGBT community. After all they are also a part and parcel of society and the lesbians, gays and transgenders want to be treated equally, why should the BJP government have a problem with that?" asked Tewari.

The central government had also raised objections over the reservation facilities granted to the third gender in employment and education under the title of backward class.

"Is it another example of their illiberalism and of their conservative, reactionary and medieval attitude that they are not able to get out of a revivalist mindset?" Tewari told ANI here while reacting to the issue.

"They are people who may have a different orientation but it doesn't mean that they are not entitled to the same constitutional rights as any other human being," he added.

The Supreme Court had in a landmark judgment in April this year recognized transgenders as the third gender in this country.

The apex court not only gave them the recognition of being a third gender in the country but also the title of backward class and entitled them to all the reservation facilities in employment, education and in public places like bus stops or railway stations at par with other citizens.
