Democratic elections in Thailand may be delayed and not occur for 18 months, Finance Minister Sommai Phaseehas said.

Prayuth Chan-ocha, the prime minister who heads the military government of Thailand since a coup d'etat in May, had earlier said that the nation would hold elections at the end of 2015, reported the BBC.

The Finance Minister however, said that he believed that it may take a year and a half.

The delay means that the nation will not return to democracy until the middle of 2016, the report said.

Phaseehas also confirmed that the martial law has no expiry date as it is something that the Prime Minister needs as a tool to tackle security.
