'A Fairytale Of New York' by the Pogues has become most played Christmas pop song ever.

According to licensing body PPL, the popularity of the festive classic, which was written by Shane McGowan while he was bed-ridden from pneumonia in 1985, cannot be contested and has been there in the Christmas UK Top 20 singles in seven different years since its release, including 2014, Contactmusic reported.

However, it turns out that the song was never able to be the Christmas Number 1, and the highest it got was at second position having been beaten by the Pet Shop Boys' cover of 'Always On My Mind' back in 1987 when it was first released.
