At least 3,000 people living close to a volcano in Indonesia were forced to evacuate after it started erupting violently.

Mount Sinabung, located on the island of Sumatra, became active again in 2010 but a sharp increase in activity has been noticed since June 2. Hot ashes and gas gushed down the side of the mountain at high speed at least 28 times on Monday, reported the BBC.

Before 2010, the volcano had been dormant for more than 400 years.

Scientists have expressed concern that the volcano could pose more dangers in the coming weeks.
