According to a newly revealed U.S. document, 20,800 United States citizens and permanent residents are a part of a federal government database of people suspected to have terrorist links.
According to the document, 5,000 names out of these are mentioned on more than one watch lists.
The documents were classified as confidential and they also reveal new details about the number of people within the broad database, said government officials.
The documents showed that the database contains records on 8,211 names who were suspected of terrorism links with Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Intelligence officers said these suspects were the most dangerous of the lot.
The documents also suggest that the U.S. believes 3,258 people were connected to the Syrian war that include 715 Europeans and Canadians and 41 Americans.
