Three dead, 30 missing after boat capsizes in Columbia

A boat carrying as many as 150 tourists capsized in a reservoir near Medellin, Colombia on Sunday, officials from the air force said.

The accident happened for reasons unknown in the El Penol reservoir in the northwest tourist town of Guatape. The reservoir is 68 kilometers (40 miles) from the city of Medellin and one of Antioquia department's main tourist draws.

The four-deck ship called Almirante went down on Sunday afternoon. Authorities did not immediately say how many people had been rescued or were missing. However, the head of Colombia's police later said that at least three people have died and 30 are missing.

 

The official said rescued people are being sent to the local hospital in Guatape.

According to local media reports, Medellin's mayor Federico Gutierrez has said he is sending a team led by a firefighting crew captain and five scuba divers.

A flotilla of recreational boats have also been rushed to the scene to pull people from the vessel.
