ANI Jakarta [Indonesia]

At least three persons died and seven others were wounded after a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck a holiday island popular with British tourists off the coast of Java in Indonesia, sparking fears of a Tsunami.

A 62-year-old man and an 80-year-old woman lost their lives when the buildings they were in collapsed, and a 34-year-old woman died when she fell while running out of her house, Sky News reported.

The earthquake activated early tsunami warning systems, which prompted scores of people to evacuate from some coastal areas.

However, no Tsunami was detected.

The injured were taken to a hospital for medical assistance, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the epicentre of the quake was at a depth of 92 km, about 52 km south-west of Tasikmalaya, a city in West Java.

Tremors lasted for about a minute.
