At least three people have been killed and 16 others injured after an (Improvised Explosive Device) IED blast occurred close to a mosque in Cinema Pamir area in Kabul City of Afghanistan on Thursday.

Afghan Ministry of Interior officials have confirmed the blast, the Tolo News reported.

The MoI spokesman Najib Danish said that two policemen and a civilian were among those killed in the explosion.

The IED was attached to a police vehicle, which was parked outside the mosque, he further said.

This comes after several rockets were fired close to Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul just hours after the United States Defence Secretary James Mattis landed in Afghanistan's capital to hold talks with President Ashraf Ghani on Wednesday.

Twenty to thirty rockets had landed at Hamid Karzai International Airport in the center of Kabul.

The airport was evacuated and all flights have been cancelled for now. The rocket attack came during the unannounced visit of the U.S. Defence Secretary.
