Earlier in May, the Special NIA court had sentenced 10 people to eight years rigorous imprisonment in connection with this case.
According to reports, Professor Joseph's right hand was cut off at the wrist by members of an extremist group called Popular Front of India (PFI). The incident took place when the Professor of Malayalam at Newman College, Thodupuzha, was returning home after attending Sunday mass at a church in Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district on July 4, 2010.
