The 'Dabangg' actress Sonakshi Sinha recently opened up on the reason behind taking up 'Akira,' an A.R. Murugadoss directorial emotional thriller, set in Mumbai and Rajasthan.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, the actress, who will be seen playing a misunderstood girl forced to fight back said, "Well, the fact that it's A.R. Murugadoss' film, the fact that he is the director who works with top action stars of the country. And it's a woman-centric film and he has put that kind of faith in me that he wants me to portray such a role. I am the hero of this film so that was the reason and of course the film has a fantastic story. It has great content and that's why I wanted to be a part of this film."

The 29-year-old actress went through a rigorous fitness regime to be in the role.

After giving audience hard-core drama in 'Ghajini' and 'Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty', 'Akira' is the third Hindi venture of Murugadoss.

The movie comes with a strong social message of women safety.

'Akira,' a remake of the 2011 Tamil-hit 'Mounaguru', stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Anurag Kashyap and Shatrughan Sinha in lead roles.

The film is scheduled to release on September 2.
