High-ranking Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the Land Acquisition Ordinance, which is set to expire on April 5th.

According to reports, BJP president Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari called on Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday to discuss the finding a solution to the issue in the wake of stiff opposition by various political parties and activists.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties are carrying out protest marches against the Land Acquisition Bill across the country. One such march in Chandigarh by the Congress workers yesterday took a violent turn after the protestors and the police clashed.

The police had to resort to the use of water cannons to stop the protestors, who were attempting to uproot the barriers erected to contain them.

Earlier this month, the Lok Sabha passed the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill, 2015 amid a walkout by opposition parties even as the government moved nine amendments to address the concerns raised by farmers.
