Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, President Vladimir Putin's fiercest critic, has vowed to push ahead with a bid to become Moscow mayor.

Hundreds of supporters and journalists met Navalny at the railway station, as he returned from his trial in Kirov. Navalny was sentenced for five years in an embezzlement case, but later released.

According to CNN, talking to the crowd, Navalny said that he was going to the elections and will certainly win it.

Navalny was detained overnight on Thursday after a court in Kirov city found him guilty of misappropriating about 500,000 dollars in a lumber deal when he was an adviser to the region's governor.

Navalny denied wrongdoing and said he was targeted because he is one of Putin's most outspoken critics.
