Top seed Simona Halep joined the list of causalities to fall at the Aegon Classic as she was defeated 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) by France's Kristina Mladenovic in the quarter-finals in Birmingham.

The Romanian, who was bidding for a fourth singles title of the year, was over powered by her French opponent, the BBC reported.

Halep, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon last year, had no answer to the world number 43, despite taking the first set.

Mladenovic will now face the sixth seed Karolina Pliskova in the semi-finals, after the world number 12 from the Czech Republic had swift straight sets 6-2, 6-2 victory over third seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

Meanwhile, the fourth seed Angelique Kerber, who is now the top-seeded player left in the draw, will take on compatriot Sabine Lisicki, who beat Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova 7-6 (7-2) 6-2.
